The natural flow of the Santa Clara River flows just east of here, however the river was dammed in 1970 to create Gunlock Reservoir, which provides flood control and irrigation water.

As a result of the dam, during times when the reservoir is at capacity, this path over the red rock serves as the overflow. This was only the second year in the past five that the waterfalls have appeared.
