The distinctive ocotillo truly stands out in the desert landscape. The long stems, which do not branch themselves, grow from a short trunk. During most of the year the ocotillo appears to be made up of large, spiny, dead sticks, however seasonal rains allow the plant to sprout small leaves that can remain for weeks and even months.

Ocotillos can grow to 20 feet tall with stems reaching a diameter of five centimeters at the base. In nurseries these plants appear to be dead and can take multiple years after being replanted to show any signs of life. When replanted, they should be done so in their original orientation, meaning the side that originally faced south should again face south, as that side is more heat and sunlight resistant.
